World Water Day is celebrated every year on March 22. This holiday was established by the United Nations to draw everyone’s attention to the quality and value of this natural resource, since only 1% of the water resources on the surface of our planet is suitable and safe for human consumption.

To update the issue of the ongoing water crisis in the world and to promote public awareness of the need to urgently improve the situation, we declared March as the Month of Water and urged children to participate in the drawing competition of the year 2024 entitled "Water in our world"!

We sincerely thank the preschool educational institutions and educational institutions that implement preschool education programs from all over Latvia who responded to our invitation to participate in the competition! This year we received more than 5,500 drawings from 421 educational institutions.

Changes in the rules of the 2025 competition

Every year brings a new experience – as the number of submitted drawings continues to grow, we have realized that some improvements and additional clauses are necessary in the regulations as well. It is important for us that the competition brings only positive emotions to all its participants, both during the development and submission of works, as well as during the voting.

This year, like no other year before, we encountered an excessive involvement of adults in the creation of children's works, so next year we will look at it even more strictly. Although the participation of educators and nannies is allowed only in the organization and control of the work process, for example in the form of recommendations and advice, many people did not take this into account.

Therefore, we inform you in advance that in 2025, stricter rules will be introduced both regarding the preparation of drawings and voting.

We thank those who sent their observations and suggestions on the necessary additions to the rules of the competition by e-mail – it is exactly the feedback that helps us make the competition even better every year! We remind you that it is possible to contact the contest organizers by writing to udensdiena@venden.lv.

Which regions are represented by the competition winners?

We are really happy that not only the number of submitted drawings, but also the activity from educational institutions throughout Latvia increases every year! We broke several records this year, including receiving almost 36% more drawings than last year. Moreover, the number of educational institutions participating in the competition has increased by a quarter.

From time to time, we receive comments on social networks that people from Riga have the greatest chance of winning in the public vote, although this is not the case at all – our observations show that the collectives in the regions are more friendly and more united in the struggle for victory. Therefore, being interested, we gathered statistics on the contests and their winners during these three years, showing the cities and villages represented by the winners of the public vote, jury evaluation and VENDEN sympathy award on the maps.

What do the winners have to do?

Prizes for the educational institution will be prepared after announcing the winners, upon agreement with the institution on the necessary sports equipment and materials necessary for learning, not exceeding the amount specified in the prize, including VAT, but no later than May 31, 2024. If during two weeks after the announcement of the competition results, the competition organizers have not yet contacted the representative of the educational institution, please contact the competition organizers by e-mail udensdiena@venden.lv. Prizes won in the competition have not been given in the form of money or gift cards.

For those authors of drawings who won awards and/or letters of appreciation for success in the public vote or for artistic performance, the awards and/or letters of appreciation will be sent to the indicated address of the educational institution by May 31, 2024. If the prizes have not yet been received after this date, and another date of receipt has not been agreed upon, please contact the organizers of the competition by e-mail udensdiena@venden.lv.

Prizes from jury for artistic performance

This year, too, all submitted children’s drawings were also evaluated by an independent creative jury consisting of two artists, members of the Latvian Union of Artists and teachers of the Baldone Art School: Talivaldis Muzikants and Ieva Muzikante.

The jury evaluated the children’s drawings submitted to the competition in accordance with particular criteria:

It was not easy to make a decision, because there were really many talented little artists among the submitted drawings! An independent art jury spent several days evaluating the submitted children's drawings.

The member of the jury, the member of the Latvian Association of Artists and director of the Baldone Art School said about the jury's assessment:

"This year, a record number of participants took part in the competition - more than 5,000 drawings, which, of course, was a big challenge for the jury. First, it should be noted that not only the large amount of works, but also their quality was a pleasant surprise. Although you could often see the touch of the teacher’s hand in the wide range of works, in the jury’s opinion it was important that the child created the work independently, while the teacher was only a good advisor and guide in the world of artistic expression. It is also pleasing that the teachers taught the children various techniques – watercolours, pastel crayons, gouache, felt-tip pens. There were even paintings in plasticine and collages with sand. The works were selected in three rounds and in the end it was even difficult to get comprised in the number of awarded works, because so many beautiful and creative works were submitted this year.

Many children’s works this year stand out with positive artistic and emotional expression, creativity, treatment of forms appropriate to the child’s age, neat drawings, interesting compositions and colour combinations, which create a joyful impression and are associated with water at the same time. Several non-traditional compositions, as well as the children’s research and ecological interest in the theme of water, were especially pleasing. The themes of the works included both fairy-tale motifs and forms of water expression observed in nature.

On behalf of the jury, I would like to express my gratitude to all the participants and their teachers for their hard work and positive emotions. I wish you creative works every day and good luck in the further competitions as well."

The jury determined 28 winners and 103 recipients of letters of appreciation for the winners for artistic performance. The educational institutions represented by the winners of the first 5 places receive a cash prize – the opportunity to supplement sports equipment or materials necessary for learning in a certain amount, however, the authors of the drawings get gifts from VENDEN and prize from the family entertainment and leisure park ADVENTICA, located in Olimpia shopping centre in Riga. The winners of the first 28 places receive gifts from VENDEN and letters of appreciation for their artistic performance. The winners of the next 103 places receive receive letters of appreciation for their artistic performance.
